BMCC Engineering students prepare for national competition Robotics

Borough of Manhattan Community College BMCC paragraph) students build robotic devices in a special workshop this semester, and plan to build their creations against students from both 2 – and 4-year colleges nationwide this spring through a competition sponsored by the American Society for Engineering Education (Aseem)

Student
designed devices are remotely controlled and shoot ping pong balls at predetermined orbits. “The purpose of the seminar is to create a fully autonomous device that is microprocessor-controlled device,” says Professor Mahmoud Ardebil engineering “and appreciate the microprocessor-based applications, from those used in automobiles, aircraft, appliances-on in all kinds of settings.”
According to the National Academy of Sciences, 40% of people earning engineering bachelor’s and master’s degrees attended community college, BMCC and engineering students to participate in this figure using the transfer schools a strong partnership with CUNY 4-year colleges, Polytechnic University , New York University and others.
Professor
Ardebil, whose own research focuses on the turbulent fluid flow and monitoring of carbon fiber composite materials that have the potential to make air travel safer, has a doctorate in mechanical engineering at the CUNY Graduate Center, and again sees robotics teams. He mixtures at different levels of students, giving them a chance to help eachother and have different roles.
“Project training in peer mentoring has a leader,” he says. “Once you explain something, the material remains with you.”
He notes that some students have experience with computer programming, and some do not. “They work a little on the macro-programming,” he says, “that is put together in a large program. And you must have a mechanical part, in addition ‘to the electronic parts.”
“We all play off eachother with attributes,” says Karam Rampersaud, standing before the robot he and his team developed. “It’s very challenging, but we will stick together as a team,” says student Donnell Green. “Whatever happens, do not stop.”
While one group of students watch their robotic device diligently monitors the path of black tape on plywood platform. Axis Siyun Chen says, “It’s our baby, our first child. We want to grow every day. Is moving in the right way – it’s what we want,”
